Strategic Objectives

    EPA-SL in preparing its strategic plan of action has identified the following strategic objectives and targets aimed at achieving sound environmental management and contribute towards sustainable development in the country:

  1. To enhance the effectiveness and improve technical capacity and managerial skills of the EPA-SL Staff as the Lead Agency for the protection and management of the country’s environment.
  2. To review and update the National Environmental Policy (NEP) in order to redirect development efforts into more environmentally sustainable national programs and practices in the country.
  3.  To develop appropriate environmental standards, regulations and guidelines for air, water and soil quality and noise levels to ensure an acceptable level of public health and environmental protection and management.
  4.  To implement environmental education and awareness raising programs at all levels throughout the country so that every Sierra Leonean becomes aware of environmental problems and issues and fully assumes his responsibilities in safeguarding the environment.
  5.  To monitor environmental changes and assess the state of the country’s environment in terms of land degradation, deforestation and environmental pollution resulting from mining and other industrial activities.
  6.  To establish network and collaboration with relevant institutions for mainstreaming environmental considerations into their national policies, programmes and projects.
  7.  To enable the populace know the current state of the environment of Sierra Leone.
  8.  To develop an environmental education and communication strategy to ensure information dissemination and the integration of environmental education into the educational system so that pupils would know their responsibilities for environmental action in safeguarding their environments.
  9.  To prepare an integrated coastal zone land use and management plan for the sustainable utilization and protection of coastal resources in the country.
  10.  To establish a national environmental documentation and information centre in order to improve access to information on the environment.
  11.  To promote the protection of  life and property by reducing environmental hazards and arrest further deforestation and unauthorized developments on the Freetown Peninsula and major provincial towns in order to prevent encroachment on catchments and forest reserves countrywide.
  12.  To meet the financial obligations of the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) to multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and establish links and areas of cooperation with regional, sub-regional and international environmental organizations as well as participate in international seminars, workshops and conferences on the environment.
  13.  To ensure effective management of sand mining along the coastlands of the Western Area.
  14.  Empower women in order to actively and effectively participate in sound environmental and natural resources management.
  15. To develop a national climate change policy and establish a National Climate Change Secretariat in order to provide guidance, direction and regulation of national and international activities on climate change as well as resource mobilization of climate financing and advocate for integration of climate change into national development process in Sierra Leone.
  16. To promote good governance in the oil and gas sector through transparency and broad participation and establish a national oil spill contingency plan in line with the Abidjan Convention and its Protocol.
